Histopathology (Histology)

The Histopathology department's function is to diagnose disease from a wide range of tissues by selecting suitable samples for examination under the microscope. Patient specimens may be received from several sources: the operating theatres, wards, endoscopy suites and out-patient clinics within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and James Paget University Hospital, Cromer and District Hospital; from GPs from Norfolk and Suffolk and occasionally dentists. The department receives around 58,000 specimens annually.

Qualified Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Support Workers carry out the technical work and the pathologists produce a report on each specimen which is sent to the appropriate clinician or doctor.

Reports

All tissue samples are examined under the microscope by a pathologist. Reports are then written, authorised and issued to the sender of the specimen and are available within NNUH and JPUH hospitals as appropriate.

58% of urgent samples are reported within 2 days, and around 88% of routine specimens are reported in 7 days. 98% of 2 week wait specimens are also reported within 7 days.

Post Mortem Examinations

The Department of Histopathology carries out Post Mortem examinations of fetuses, neonates, children and adults, either on behalf of hospital doctors (with relative's consent) or for HM Coroner. Under exceptional circumstances necropsies can be undertaken for general practitioners.
