Laboratory Medicine

Laboratory Medicine encompasses the studies of the Trust's  Clinical Biochemistry , HaematologyMicrobiology and Virology  and Cytogenetics  departments.

The laboratory opened in 2001 and was refurbished in 2005 to accommodate an extended automation. We offer biochemistry, haematology, immunology and blood transfusion for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals Foundation Trust (NNUHFT), outlying hospitals and the Norfolk Primary Care Trust (PCT).

Norfolk has a population of 825,000 and the laboratory processes approximately 450,000 blood counts; 150,000 coagulation samples; 453,000 urea and electrolytes requests; 42,000 immunology assays; 35,000 blood groups and cross match around 26,000 units of blood a year.

The laboratory is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, with staff working a variety of flexible working hours based around full and support shift schemes.

The laboratory information system (LIS) is interfaced to most analysers and linked through the hospital network to wards, departments, some outlying hospitals and GP surgeries. We offer Order/Entry and a comprehensive results service to all the above locations.

Currently the Trust is “rolling-out” a web based version of the order/entry software (ICE) to all GP surgeries within our area. This will be coordinated through a liaison group between the PCT and IT at NNUHFT. All wards and departments within the hospital already have this facility to browse the web based results. Requests

During opening times the laboratory is routinely staffed and will be able to respond to most requests.
