Supervisor of Midwives

What can the NNUH SUPERVISORS OF MIDWIVES do for you, the pregnant woman & her family?

• A supervisor of midwives (SoM) is an experienced midwife who has undertaken training to become a SoM. Every midwife must have a named SoM.

• Her role is to protect the public by supporting both you and the midwife, ensuring that the care offered is right for you & will benefit you and your baby.

• She will listen to and act upon any concerns you might have about your care

• She will support and advise you about your care choices eg place of birth

• She will help promote good communication between you and your midwife if required

• She promotes safe practice and is involved in investigations when the safety of you or your baby is compromised

How can you contact a SoM?

A member of the NNUH SoM team is available 24 hours a day through the main hospital switchboard 01603 286286

Further details in leaflet form can be found in public waiting areas of Maternity Services “Support for Parents – How supervision and supervisors of midwives can help you”.
