From Theatres to Track

Rob Smith, a specialist practitioner in orthopaedic theatres at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, has been appointed the Venue Medical Manager for the Cycling Velodrome at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Rob, who has over 41 years' healthcare experience, is a keen cyclist with Velo Club Norwich. He was the Venue Medical Manager at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002; he has also been the Senior Nurse at several world cycling championships and was involved in the Tour of Britain for 18 years.

Rob will be leading two teams of healthcare professionals to provide medical assistance to both athletes and members of the public at the Olympic venues. His involvement began last summer with the first public test events at the Olympic Park.

Rob, who will be taking career break for 3 months and relocating to London, says: “This is an exciting opportunity and I am very lucky to be appointed to this position particularly at the Cycling Velodrome which combines my love of healthcare and passion for cycling. This will no doubt be the pinnacle of my career as I head towards retirement next September.”
