NNUH runs first Newborn Life Support Course in Norwich

Doctors, nurses and midwives from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) have taken part in the first Newborn Life Support (NLS) course to be held in Norwich.

The NLS course has been developed under the umbrella of the Resuscitation Council (UK) to provide practical instruction in the resuscitation of babies at birth. It is designed for all health care workers who may be called upon to resuscitate a newborn baby. The course involves a series of lectures, practical skill stations and newborn simulations.

The one day course was held on 5th December and was directed by Niall Pearcey, Resuscitation Officer and the Medical Director was David Booth, Consultant Neonatologist at NNUH. The course was attended by a mixture of midwives, NICU nurses and doctors who all attend deliveries.

The ability to resuscitate a newborn baby is a mandatory skill for health care workers involved in the delivery of babies and the NLS course is valid for a period of four years. Previously doctors, nurses and midwives from NNUH had to attend NLS courses in King’s Lynn but it is now hoped that the course can continue to be offered locally.

Resuscitation Officer, Niall Pearcey said: “Overall both the candidates and instructors found the course was a success and we are looking forward to running two more NLS courses in 2013.”
