Professional profile: Dr Mukhtyar read Medicine at the M P Shah Medical College, Saurashtra University. Following qualification and reading for a 'MD', Dr Mukhtyar came to the UK and trained in rheumatology at the Oxford deanery. Dr Mukhtyar was a EULAR research fellow and read at Green Templeton College, Oxford. He was awarded a 'MSc' for his work on validating the BVAS v.3, an instrument for quantifying disease activity in systemic vasculitis. During this time he was the lead author for the European recommendations for managing systemic vasculitis. Dr Mukhtyar is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and represents his college and the specialty of rheumatology on the MRCP Part 2 Examinations board. Prior to this he was a member and secretary of the rheumatology question writing group. Dr Mukhtyar is a long-standing member of the British Society for Rheumatology and is a member of the society's clinical affairs committee.

At the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, he fulfills both his clinical interests running specialist clinics for patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (first 2 years), and for patients with systemic vasculitis. The latter clinic is supported by Dr Alex Heaton from renal medicine and Dr Ajay Kamath from respiratory medicine. He also runs a Giant Cell Arteritis clinic supported by a specialist nurse.
