Hundreds of blind and partially sighted people have been helped to lead fuller lives by the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind's Hospital Information Service since it was set up 10 years ago.

From small beginnings at the West Norwich Hospital in 1993, the information service now operates in six hospitals around the county with two paid members of staff and 21 highly trained and dedicated volunteers.

"People who lose their sight often become confused and lonely and their lives are limited because they do not know what help and support is available to them," says information adviser Joan Barber.

"This service gives them information and advice to help them remain as independent as possible."

Patients can be referred to community workers if they require a home visit or encouraged to visit one of the Association's equipment centres to see the range of equipment available.

On Friday 12 September the information service is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a party at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital's Eye Clinic. The party is open to all current volunteers who have helped with this service over the years.
