Multidisciplinary Team

If you have recently been told you have or are suspected of having cancer you will have already met some of the people involved in your care. These health professionals work within a team which is called a specialist Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) which is based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. The members of the Upper GI MDT are experts at treating and managing cancer.  They are involved with your investigations, diagnosis and treatment.

Gastroenterologists

Your Consultant will provide you with information about your diagnosis and the diagnositic tests you will before being referred to other specialist teams for treatment

Oesophagogastric Surgeons

Your Consultant will provide you with information about surgery and continue to monitor your progress during and after surgery.

Jane or  Maria will be your keyworker from the point of your diagnosis, providing information, advice and support about your diagnosis and treatment. They will refer you to other nurse specialists for additional support if applicable.

Oncology team

Your Consultant will provide you with information about chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments and will monitor your progress throughout your treatment.

Patient Support Services

Oesophageal Patients Association

The local support group meets twice a year (April and October) at the NNUH providing support and advice for patients and their families/carers who undergo surgery for oesophageal cancer.

The local patient representatives also provide support for patients and families/carer at any point during their treatment and meet patients on the ward following surgery
