Professional profile : Nick Astbury trained at Guys Hospital and qualified in 1972. Before becoming a Senior Registrar at Kings College Hospital he worked at St Thomas's and Moorfields Eye Hospital and for 6 months in Gaborone in Botswana. He was appointed as a consultant in Norwich in 1983 and was Clinical Director from 1994-2002. He was elected in 1993 as East Anglian Regional Representative to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and became a Vice President of the College and Chair of Professional Standards in 2000 and was elected President in 2003. He has maintained an active interest in international affairs and has worked for short spells in Sarajevo and St John's Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. As president of the RCOphth he has travelled to China, Pakistan and Egypt. More recently he has initiated a link between the Norfolk and Norwich and the Sudan. Nick Astbury is chairman of VISION 2020 UK, a trustee of the Impact Foundation, a Keeler Scholarship trustee and a consultant adviser to the Norfolk and Norwich Association of the Blind.
