Special clinical interests: Antimicrobial prescribing, bacteraemia, management of infections in older people, infection control in mental health care, development and delivery of medical microbiology diagnostic and clinical services.

Professional profile: I have been a consultant in Norwich since 1989, a member of the team providing an integrated diagnostic, clinical and infection control service to the Trust and colleagues in primary care. I qualified from the Welsh National School of Medicine in 1979, and moved to Norwich after training posts in Cardiff and London.

I have been antimicrobial prescribing lead for the Trust since 2001, developing various initiatives with colleagues (eg ward rounds, policies and audits) with a particular interest in Older People's Medicine. I have been Infection Control Doctor for the local mental health care Trust for many years taking a tailored approach to their requirements.

I have been head of department on several occasions; I am also honorary senior lecturer at the UEA.

Other roles include: Chairman of Consultant Staff Committee (2011-2012), and in the past Hon. Sec. of both the Med Chi, and Norwich Medical Benevolent Fund; Royal College of Pathologists-Vice President (2005-08), Chair of Specialty Advisory Committee on Medical Microbiology (2005-08), Chair/Vice Chair Lay Advisory Committee 1998-2003, Director Clinical Audit 1995-99; Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Infection Training Working Group, member 2007-11; CPA(UK) Board member 2006–09; HTA Pharmaceuticals Panel member 2003-6; Chair, Eastern Region Microbiology Development Group 1996-98.

Personal profile: Outside work I enjoy walking, usually with the dog, and regular visits to the Lake District; gardening, cooking and reading detective fiction.
