Diabetes Eye Screening

Who are we?
If you have diabetes and live in Norfolk then you might have met us here at the hospital or as we travel round the county. We are based in the Ophthalmology department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and since 1990 have been photographing the eyes of people with diabetes in Norfolk to prevent them developing eye disease.
Who are our clients?
Anyone who is on the diabetic register of their local GP at the venues we visit and is over 12 years old. Anyone under the care of the Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre with exceptions – see below
Who don’t we see?
Anyone attending the NNUH or Cromer eye departments for a retinal clinic is excluded. Those attending for glaucoma and other appointments we do see.
Some people are unable to co-operate with the screening process and will be seen in the eye clinic instead.
The Staff
All our staff are employed by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and receive Hospital mandatory training each year. They comply with all national protocols and must study for and gain a national qualification.
Our clinical lead is a consultant ophthalmologist and all referrals are made by a consultant or senior ophthalmologist.
