Contractors appointed for new £12 million hospital in Cromer
Balfour Beatty has been appointed by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust to build a new £12 million hospital in Cromer, it was announced today.
The new hospital will replace the original Mill Road hospital which first opened in 1932. It will be for day case operations, out-patients, diagnostics, dialysis, and minor injuries care and will be completed in 2010.
As a result of the procurement process, Mansell, a major operating company within Balfour Beatty plc, will carry out the construction work. The Mansell team is based in Swaffham and includes the Norfolk architects Purcell Miller Tritton.
The Trusts design brief is for a modern flexible hospital, environmentally-friendly and sustainable, sympathetic to local surroundings and using local materials where possible. The new hospital is being funded by the £12 million Sagle Bernstein legacy.
The Mansell team will now start the job of looking at the functional needs of the building and developing design options in consultation with staff and patient representatives.
Trust chairman David Prior said: We are delighted to have appointed the Mansell team to undertake what is a significant investment in acute NHS services in North Norfolk. We are determined to provide people with the very best hospital facilities and to make them environmentally sustainable.
Keith Hayes, Balfour Beatty ProCure21 Lead, said: We are very proud to be involved with providing the community with a great design befitting the local environment that will offer healthcare facilities tailored to the needs of local people. We look forward to working collaboratively with the Trust and all the other members of the project team.
The procurement process for the new Cromer hospital was delayed earlier this year following a last-minute attempt to get the original hospital listed. English Heritage rejected the proposal on the grounds the current hospital is of little architectural interest.
Notes
Sagle Bernstein legacy In 2001, the trustees of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust received an £11.4 million legacy left to Cromer Hospital by the late Sagle Bernstein. Mrs Bernstein was a local resident and her sister had been a patient at Cromer Hospital. The value of the legacy, which is held on deposit, currently stands at £12 million.
