2008/09 annual healthcheck result for NNUH

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been rated by the Care Quality Commission as Good for use of resources and Fair for quality of services.

The Care Quality Commission  (CQC) 2008/09 annual health check looks at performance against a range of measures and targets, and use of resources. The possible ratings range from Weak, Fair, Good or Excellent.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was judged as a Good performer for use of resources and Fair for services. The rating for services reflects the fact that the trust missed the A&E target last year by just 0.03 of a per cent last year (which was 28 patients out of 85,483), and had higher levels of delayed discharges in 2008/09.

Chief Executive Anna Dugdale said: “We are fully compliant on the core standards laid down by the CQC and we are already focusing on the opportunities for further improvements in the quality of our services. The annual healthcheck is one of a number of indicators used to judge quality of care and we know that our mortality rate (Hospital Standardised Mortality Rate) is low at 85.

We also survey more than 1,000 patients a month and 98% of them say they would recommend our hospitals to friends and family. We have also reduced infections like MRSA and C diff by more than half over the past year and the hospital will also soon have 20 additional beds. These results reflect the dedication and excellent teamwork of all of our staff.”

Note: The expected HSMR rate is 100. If the HSMR is lower than 100 it means fewer patients die than could be expected and if it is higher than 100 then more patients die than would be expected. The rate for NNUH is 85.
