One Mile per person per day for Radiotherapy

In the UK 112 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer daily. This may be a cancer statistic but to Tim Cave this figure symbolises the reason for his 336 mile bike ride.

Tim Cave, husband of Julie Cave, Director of Resources at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) has set himself the challenge of cycling from Paris to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the aim to help raise money for the hospital’s Targeted Radiotherapy Appeal.

Tim has previously raised money for the NNUH Cots for Tots Appeal in 2011 but this year he wanted to set himself a tougher challenge and will cycle 336 miles in only 3 days. Tim will be riding his trusty 20 year old touring bike and will be without any back up support.

Tim has taken to Twitter and is swapping tips and encouragement with the online community to keep him pedalling hard for this challenge.

Tim said, ‘Our family have been lucky not to have been affected by cancer but as a man I am very aware of prostate cancer and the affect it has on lives. The number of men diagnosed with the disease each day surprised me. I hope that by matching it to the distance from Paris, where Marie Curie did her pioneering work, to the NNUH, will help people get a handle on this.’

Money raised will go towards Target Radiotherapy Appeal, which needs to raise £600,000 to build facilities to deliver a new type of radiotherapy for patients with gynaecological and prostate cancers at the NNUH. Brachytherapy reduces the number of treatments required and will mean patients can receive treatment locally rather than travelling to Cambridge or London.

Louise Cook, Fundraising Manager said: “We are really grateful to Tim for getting involved and helping to raise money. Our staff and their families all do so much in their spare time to help the charity.

Tim will start his journey from Paris on Friday 28 June and will return to the NNUH on Sunday 30 June.
