Eighty-four year old Grandma Tackles 8km mile Walk To Say Thank You
Eighty-four year old Lucienne Ullmer is raising money for the eye clinic at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after it saved her sight. Mrs Ullmer will be walking 8km with family and friends in a circular walk to and from Brancaster on 19 September.
The hospital’s Eye Clinic is very close to Mrs Ullmer’s heart as she currently visits it every six weeks for treatment to maintain her sight.
Mrs Ullmer said: “All the team are so kind and caring and look after me so well. It is because of their efforts that I can still see and have a very active life. I would like to do something to help raise funds which can help provide extra items required by the department. Many people don’t know about the Eye Clinic and the work they do and how it impacts on people’s lives. I am relative fit and healthy so I want to do something to make a difference.”’
Her daughter Sue Cole added: “Without this service my mother wouldn’t be able to see. She is fiercely independent and the treatment she has received has enabled her the freedom to continue driving and carry out everyday activities such as going shopping, visiting friends and to keeping fit with regular pilates sessions.”
Mr Andy Glen, Consultant in Ophthalmology at NNUH, said: “We are very grateful to Mrs Ullmer and her family for their support. Our service is very busy seeing over 100,000 patients every year and donations can be used to purchase those extra items of equipment which benefit patients in the eye clinic.”
“Not everyone realises that people can support the ward or department in the hospital as part of the hospital charity,” added Louise Cook, Fundraising Manager, “Having met Mrs Ullmer I know she will not only complete the walk successfully but continue to help raise money for the eye clinic in any way she can. She is a wonderful lady who is full of gratitude for what the NHS team have done for her.’
