NNUH Radiology department wins innovation award

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) has won a Health Enterprise East (HEE) award for an innovation designed to benefit patients.

The Radiology Department won the Service Improvement Category for their work on reducing the number of appointments missed through the patients not attending
The department used targeted text messaging via a system on the hospital’s intranet, to patients who were due to attend a radiology appointment within the next 48 hours. The project has reduced the “Did Not Attend”  (DNA) rate from 5% to 3.1% saving NNUH £136,000 since it started in July 2015.

Philippa Taitt, Radiology Service Improvement Manager, said: “We are delighted and amazed to have won. The team is really proud that our DNA project has been recognised by HEE, and to have won this award. We used to experience in the region of 1000 DNAs in Radiology every month, and now we are seeing around 50% reduction, so the project has definitely been successful.”

At an awards ceremony hosted by BBC presenter Susie Fowler Watt, the team were presented with £2,500 to further develop their idea and an engraved trophy.

Two other entries from the hospital were also shortlisted and reached the finalist stages. These included the development of the ‘manage my menopause’ website () and an app being developed for patients recovering from Stroke.
