A mum and daughter from Norwich have raised £4,500 for the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital charity as a way to say thank you for the care they have both received as cancer patients.

Julia Fisher, 70, and her daughter Emma Manning, 46, from Hellesdon, have been hosting arts and crafts stalls over the last year to raise money for the Oncology Day Unit and the Acute Oncology Service at NNUH. Emma also raised funds by taking part in a sponsored head shave too.

In addition to their donations to the NNUH hospital charity, Julia and Emma raised £1,500 for the Big C Charity, where they also received care.

In January 2015, Julia was diagnosed with breast cancer and in that same year, Emma was also diagnosed with breast cancer. Since their treatment started at NNUH, they have both wanted to express their thanks to the teams involved with their care.

Julia said: “The care that both Emma and I have received at the hospital has been amazing. The nurses at the hospital have always been so helpful and calming and they have really supported both of us through a very stressful time. We’d particularly like to thank the Chaplaincy team and Consultants, Susanna Alexander and Gill Gray as well as the Acute Oncology Service nurses Bev, Catherine and Hannah. We’d also like to thank Jill Chapman from the Big C Centre.”

Julia added: “Emma has been the driving force for the fundraising and I am so proud of her. Even when she was very ill, she always had a smile on her face.”

Emma, who is still receiving treatment at NNUH said: “I just wanted to make something positive out of a negative situation and do something more than just saying thank you. Everyone at the hospital went the extra mile when I was receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Emma and Julia are always looking for any unwanted gifts and wool so that they can make things to sell and raise more funds. If you have donations please call Julia on 01603 406599.

Louise Cook, NNUH Fundraising Manager said: “Emma and Julia have raised such a massive amount of money and we are so privileged that they have chosen to support the hospital charity in such a way. They have been through a very difficult time and to dedicate their efforts to raising money for us is truly inspiring.”

Emma McKay, NNUH Director of Nursing said: “We are so grateful for Emma’s and Julia’s fantastic fundraising efforts. The money they have raised will go towards helping cancer patients going through a very difficult time, and I want to thank them both for supporting the hospital charity.”
