Hundreds of schoolchildren receive sun safety lesson

Hundreds of children have learnt a valuable sun safety lesson ahead of the summer holidays.

Nurses from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) have visited almost 50 school assemblies over the last few weeks as part of the Sun Safe Schools scheme.

Skin cancer nurses at NNUH have been delivering sun safe lessons for the last three years as part of the project run the UK skin cancer charity SKCIN to teach children about the importance of keeping safe in the sun.

Kelly Almand-Chinn, a Skin Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist at NNUH, who ran the assemblies with colleagues Lesley Hawkes and Beverly Underwood, said:  “It was great to speak to so many children this year and we have visited 48 schools over the last two months to get across the sun safety message.

Thank you to all the schools who have invited us in as without the engagement of the school teachers and staff we wouldn’t be able to deliver this vital message.”

The skin cancer nurses at NNUH are working closely with SKCIN (The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity) to help the charity with its aims to prevent skin cancer, promote early detection and save lives.
