Children’s hospital praised in latest patient experience survey

Staff at the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital have been praised in the latest Children and Young People’s Patient Experience Survey.

More than 260 patients and their parents/carers took part in the 2024 survey, which is coordinated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

There were three different versions of the questionnaire designed for specific age groups (children 0 -7, 8-11 and 12-15) who were admitted as a day case or in-patient and discharged between 1 March 2024 and 31 May 2024.

Parents and carers rated us as better than most Trusts for having confidence and trust in the staff caring for and treating their child. We also performed better than most Trusts for the choice of food available and for staff playing with and carrying out activities with children. Waiting times in waiting areas also scored well, while parents rated noise at night less favourably.

Rachael Cocker, Chief Nurse, said: “Listening to feedback from our young patients and their families and carers is really important to us. We are very grateful to them for taking the time to share their experience which tells us where we are doing well and the areas we want to improve. Overall, these are great results which show how hard all our clinical teams, support staff and play teams work to make being in hospital as pleasant as possible for children and their loved ones.”

Last year we launched a Youth Forum for those aged 13-19 who have used services at the hospital. A small group of volunteers meet regularly to work on projects which will enhance patient experience and bring service improvements. Most recently they have co-produced patient information leaflets for children and have been involved with a consultation on environmental arts for new paediatric areas.
