Professional Profile: Professor John Phillips is a Consultant ENT Surgeon working at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; and Honorary Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of East Anglia. Professor Phillips trained at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London and was awarded a degree in Neuroscience at University College London. Professor Phillips took up his consultant position in Norwich after completing a fellowship in Otology and Neurotology at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. Professor Phillips has experience in all aspects of adult and paediatric otology, neurotology, and medicolegal aspects of noise exposure. Professor Phillips has a particular interest in patients with tinnitus and dizziness, and these two conditions are the focus of much of his research.

Professor Phillips has a strong interest in evidence-based medicine which has led to the publication of national clinical guidelines, and he has authored numerous Cochrane systematic reviews. Professor Phillips has been a clinical advisor for the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) Acute Hospitals Study. Professor Phillips is a member of the Barany Society, and he has been a member of the ENT-UK (British Association of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery) Clinical Audit and Practice Advisory Group (CAPAG). Professor Phillips has chaired the British Tinnitus Association’s professional advisory committee and has been a council member of the British Society of Otology. In 2018, Professor Phillips was appointed to the NICE tinnitus guidelines committee. In the same year, Professor Phillips was awarded a PhD in recognition of a body of work that he had published in the area of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Most recently, Professor Phillips has been funded by a UK Medical Research Council DPFS grant and a National Institute for Health and Care Research i4i award, totaling over £2M to develop a body-worn medical device to aid the diagnosis of dizziness conditions (CAVA). Professor Phillips is the managing editor of the Oxford Textbook of Otolaryngology, which was published in 2025.

Personal Profile: Despite a busy clinical and academic practice, Professor Phillips has many hobbies outside medicine. He is a keen woodworker, photographer, and musician.
