
Dr Rob Sherwin has been appointed as Group Chief Medical Officer of the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group.
Dr Sherwin will join the Board of the Hospitals Group, which includes James Paget University Hospital, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn, from 1 December as part of the executive team
A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, he has been Medical Director for Specialised Commissioning and Health and Justice in NHS England, East of England region for the last four years. His portfolio has included strategic leadership across specialised services, equity-focused commissioning, and regional medical governance.
“I am genuinely excited to be joining the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group,” said Dr Sherwin. “Across our three hospitals and wider system partners in primary, community, mental health and social care, there is a wealth of talent and commitment to improving patient care. I am keen to contribute the experience that I’ve gained across clinical, academic, and leadership roles to help shape and deliver our shared vision.”
He added: “I am particularly inspired by the ambition to establish an Academic Health Science Centre, the implementation of a new Electronic Patient Record, and the development of state-of-the-art hospital facilities in King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth. These initiatives reflect a forward-thinking approach to healthcare, and I am eager to play my part in delivering excellent, equitable care for our population.”
Dr Sherwin trained in medicine at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in London. After initial clinical posts in London, he returned to the East of England to train in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Rosie Maternity Hospital, Cambridge, Hinchingbrooke, and West Suffolk Hospitals.
Following his PhD and completion of his subspecialty training in Urogynaecology, he was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Whittington Hospital in North London. During his time there, he held several leadership roles including Clinical Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Director of Research and Development, and Associate Medical Director with responsibility for Appraisal and Revalidation. He also served as a Specialist Advisor to the Care Quality Commission, Secondary Care Representative on Bedfordshire CCG, and National Lead for Women’s Health for the Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) programme.
Dr Sherwin subsequently worked in Auckland, New Zealand, as Director of Women’s Health at Auckland District Health Board, where he led a large multi-disciplinary team and oversaw regional and national services including maternal-fetal medicine, gynaecological oncology, and community midwifery.
