Specialities dealt with by this ward: Stroke Medicine /Elective Cardiology
The Cardio Elective Bay is in Heydon Ward.
We do not have a waiting area for patients relatives for those who are on the elective programme .
The12 bedded Hyper Acute Stroke Unit is situated on Heydon ward. Visiting times are from - 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Stroke care is delivered by a multi-disciplinary team. This includes doctors, nurses, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dieticians and the stroke research team.
The team work together to provide individually tailored care that meets the needs of individual patients.
We provide 24 hour emergency assessment and treatment, including clot busting thrombolysis therapy in the first few hours after stroke. Our stroke alert nurses and doctors meet the patient and the paramedics at A&E and look after the patient from the moment they arrive in the hospital.
Once in our stroke unit our therapy team assess patients and provide rehabilitation (physiotherapy, occupational and speech therapy). These aim to support the stroke survivor to return to normal functions after a stroke.
Once patients are ready to leave the acute care environment we also provide Early Supported Discharge and access to a dedicated Inpatient Rehabilitation facility. These are provided by Norwich Community Health and Care NHS Trust.
The four stroke consultants are Dr Kneale Metcalf , Prof John Potter, Dr Nav Shinh and Dr Patrick Sutton.
