Venous Thrombo-Embolism & Deep Vein Thrombosis Clinic
DVT Service
The DVT service is an emergency clinic which sees patients with suspected blood clots in their leg. The patients are referred by GPs, A&E and hospital outpatient clinics. On arrival to the VTE Clinic the patients are assessed for DVT, undergo diagnostic investigations (blood test or ultrasound scan) then commence an individualised treatment plan if a blood clot is detected. Full education is given on all treatments and the majority of the patients are treated as an outpatient. The patient’s visit will be approximately 2 – 4 hours in total dependant on their results.
Any questions the patient may have can be discussed privately with the specialist nurse during their consultation.
The service is run by the Anticoagulation team which consists of nurse specialists, anticoagulation assistants and a specialist pharmacist under the guidance of the Consultant Haematologists.
Patient referrals from the GPs need to attend the clinic between 9am and 2pm Monday to Friday.
Patient referrals from outpatient clinics and/or A&E need to attend the clinic between 9am and 3.30pm.
