NNUH statement following the Thirlwall Inquiry

We know that having a baby in neonatal care can be an overwhelming and uncertain time. You know your baby best, and you are an essential part of their care. Our commitment is to care for your baby safely and compassionately, keep you informed, involve you in decisions, and take every question or concern seriously.

The final report of the Thirlwall Inquiry was published on 15 September 2026. The Inquiry was established following the convictions of former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby. It considered what happened at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, listened to the experiences of the families affected, and looked at what the NHS must learn.

Our thoughts are first and foremost with the babies and families at the heart of these terrible events. We recognise the report and the news coverage surrounding it may feel deeply upsetting or frightening, particularly if your baby is receiving neonatal care now or has done so in the past.
