Professional profile: Mr Irshad Shaikh is an experienced consultant general and colorectal surgeon based at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He gained his medical degree (MBBS) from Karnatak University in India in 1997. Subsequently he trained in Scotland and completing higher surgical training on the Southeast Thames rotation in London. He was awarded MD (research) degree from University of Aberdeen in 2008 and CCT (completion of specialist training in general and colorectal surgery) in 2013.

He went on to complete a yearlong RSO fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery sponsored by Ethicon in 2014. He also undertook training in locally advanced rectal cancers, including pelvic exenteration.

In October 2014, he was appointed as a consultant general and colorectal surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Additionally, he previously held an honorary consultant surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital, Harrow, London. He leads the advanced rectal cancer surgery team and is the joint lead for anal cancer surgery. He one of two surgeons in NNUH accredited by the JAG as national bowel cancer screening (BSCP) endoscopist.

He was the team lead for starting robotic colorectal programme at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He is a European level trainer for robotic colorectal surgery and experienced proctor accredited by EARCS. He was instrumental in supporting robotic colorectal cancer surgery program in Scottish health boards and several hospitals in England. He regularly provides robotic training to several European colorectal surgeons. In addition, he is a trainer for laparoscopic colorectal surgery in national level courses. He has described and published several innovative operative procedures in peer reviewed journals. He has a great interest in robotic/laparoscopic clinical research. He was awarded grants in Aberdeen (2006-7) and Norwich (2020) to undertake cancer related as well robotic surgery research. He is keen trainer for surgical trainees and also mentors/proctors junior consultant surgeon in robotic surgical training. He completed in master’s in clinical education degree from UEA in 2019 demonstrating commitment to surgical training. He also holds a position of college tutor for Royal college of surgeons on England.

His specialist areas are anal fistula/fissure surgery, haemorrhoid surgery (including HALO procedure), anal and colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, rectal prolapse surgery, hernia surgery, and treatment of locally advanced pelvic cancer. The cancer surgery results are published online as well in peer reviewed journals.

Outside of the hospital, Mr Shaikh’s hobbies include cricket and travelling. He is also a keen chess player. He also enjoys cooking, cycling, and running to relax after a busy week.
