Professional profile: I am a general consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon with a sub-speciality in surgery of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. My practice includes fractures, sports injuries, strains/tears of ligaments and tendons, problems around the shoulder including rotating cuff tears and joint replacement for arthritis. Much of my shoulder and elbow surgery is performed through an arthroscope (key-hole surgery which avoids large incisions and speeds up post-operative recovery). Post-operative rehabilitation is vital to the success of upper limb surgery and therefore I liaise closely with the nursing staff, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
I was brought up and educated in Suffolk, but went to medical school and undertook my orthopaedic training in London. My final training year was spent in Australia where I completed an Australian Orthopaedic Association fellowship in upper limb surgery at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. I have also worked at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where I gained a Master of Surgery degree in cartilage repair with Professor George Bentley. I have published numerous research papers on general orthopaedic and upper limb surgery. My current research interest is in complex elbow fractures and wrist surgery for arthritis. I keep up to date by attending several international and national orthopaedic conferences each year.
Personal profile: I am married to Caroline who works as a pharmacist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. I try to keep as fit as possible and when not working I enjoy windsurfing, sailing and tennis. I hate being stuck indoors!
