Statement following pacemaker Field Safety Notice

Dr Bernard Brett, NNUH Medical Director, said: “We understand this will be concerning for patients who have had pacemaker procedures at our hospital. We are contacting affected patients after a Field Safety Notice was issued by Boston Scientific about a rare issue with certain pacemaker generators made before 2018.
We have established additional clinics and a helpline for affected patients and will be arranging the replacement of pacemakers which have less than four years battery life remaining. Following a thorough review by our cardiology team, there are 72 patients who will require a new pacemaker, and we will be prioritising the replacement of these for patients who have been identified as the most urgent.
Another group of around 110 patients will not require an immediate pacemaker replacement but will need more frequent monitoring than normal and we are in the process of contacting them directly.
I’d like to thank our Medicine Division and Cardiology colleagues for taking immediate action to review and put measures in place to maintain patient safety.”
