Emergency Department
Stay at home if you have Covid-19 symptoms
If you or someone in your household has coronavirus symptoms, stay at home and book a test.
Please do not visit an Emergency Department, walk-in centre, Minor Injuries Unit, pharmacy or GP surgery to get a Covid-19 test.
You will not be tested if you turn up at the Emergency Department for a coronavirus test and your actions risk infecting and spreading the virus to patients, staff and visitors if you do so.
The main symptoms of coronavirus are:
- a high temperature
- a new, continuous cough
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.
Only book a test if you have one of the three symptoms.
For most people, Covid-19 will be a mild illness. If you feel you cannot cope with your symptoms at home, or your condition gets worse, then use the NHS 111 online Covid-19 service. If you do not have internet access, call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.
Please see our visiting page for updated guidance during Covid-19.
Emergency Department
Our Emergency Department , sometimes called Accident and Emergency (A&E), has its own dedicated entrance located in the East block on Level 2. The department is open all year round, 24 hours day.
Our A&E is one of the busiest in the region and treats more than 108,000 patients a year. You can visit our Choose Well section to see what other health services are available if you need help with health problems.
Within the A&E department we treat patients with life-threatening problems in the Resuscitation area (we call it Resus). Those patients with major illnesses or injuries are treated in the area we call Trolley Bay.
Children are cared for in their own separate treatment and waiting area. A&E patients may also need to be seen by our Radiology team for x-rays or MRI and CT scans and patients with broken bones are treated in our plaster room.
Emergency drop-off bays are available for patients being transported to the Emergency Department.
This is an emergency drop-off only and cars should be moved within ten minutes to ensure that there is always capacity near the entrance of the Emergency Department for our most poorly patients to receive the care they need in a timely manner.
The nearest public NNUH parking spaces to the Emergency Department are the East outpatients car parks G and H.
Note: A&E should not be confused with the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). The AMU assesses emergency patients sent to hospital by family doctors and there is no access to the AMU from the A&E department.
