Cromer Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry scanning (DXA or Dual energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) is a simple and accurate method of detecting the degree of osteoporosis in a person by measuring their bone mineral density.

Osteoporosis is a condition of the bony skeleton characterised by a low bone mass with deterioration of bone tissue. As a consequence osteoporotic bone is more fragile and likely to fracture. Leaflets on osteoporosis are available on request when you attend for your appointment.

Each DXA scan takes about 10 minutes, and involves scanning two areas of your body, usually the lumbar spine and the left hip (to look at the neck of femur).

The department takes referrals from hospital consultants (all disciplines) and GPs.

Appointments are offered either at Norfolk & Norwich University NHS FT or at Cromer District Hospital. If you require a hoist to transfer onto the scanning table, you will be offered an appointment at Cromer District Hospital, as we have a state-of-the-art, modern hoist housed within the DXA room, designed to maximise your comfort, safety and experience.

Please note appointments are not offered every day at Cromer, but on an ad-hoc basis dependent upon demand.
