Microbiology
The Microbiology Department plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with infection, developing and testing new antimicrobials, monitoring the spread of antimicrobial resistance and disease, educating and advising fellow health professionals on the prudent use of antimicrobials both in the hospital environment and in the community. It also provides diagnostic support to the Infection Control Team. It has rapid access to national reference laboratory facilities through the Health Protection Agency Laboratories network and provides epidemiological data for the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre in Colindale, and investigates outbreaks of infectious disease in support of the Consultant(s) in Communicable Disease Control at the Health Protection Unit.
