Clinical Pharmacy
Our pharmacy teams provide medication expertise to all areas of the Trust, providing expert advice to patients and healthcare professionals. Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians work closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective medication usage for inpatients and outpatients cared for by the Norfolk and Norwich NHS Foundation Trust.

Rotational Pharmacist Programme
In addition to our specialist pharmacists, we also have rotational pharmacists and specialist rotational pharmacists who support us in delivering outstanding patient care. Being a rotational or specialist rotational pharmacist allows junior staff to develop their knowledge and skills in multiple parts of the pharmacy service whilst also gaining invaluable experience in across patient care across all division (Medicine, Surgery, Women’s and Children’s).
Newly qualified pharmacists are supported to complete a postgraduate clinical diploma and complete the Newly Qualified Pharmacist Programme. All pharmacists within the Trust receive support and opportunity to become Independent Prescribers.
Pharmacy Technicians
Our Pharmacy Technicians are an integral part of our clinical teams, they visit inpatient wards daily and support the Pharmacists and wider Multidisciplinary Team in all aspects of pharmacy care, such as medication reconciliation (check of medication on admission to hospital), patient counselling, safe medicines management and medication supply. In addition, we many specialist Pharmacy Technicians working in extended clinical roles such as:
- Medical Admissions
- Pre-op assessment
- Oncology and Haematology
- Older People’s Medicine
- Cardiology
- Orthopaedics
Other Involvement
Senior members of the pharmacy team are involved with many committees and groups across the Trust. They provide expert advice on the safe and effective use of medicines, ensuring that all processes and information within documents approved are in line with current legislation and best practice. These include the Drug, Therapeutics & Medicines Management Committee and its various sub Groups that include Medicines Management, Patient Group Directions, Non-medical prescriber Forum and Antimicrobial Subgroup), and Clinical Guidelines and Protocol (CGAP), Thrombosis & Thromboprophylaxis, Clinical Competency Group, Advanced Practitioner Oversight Group (APOG), and Nursing and Clinical Professionals Board
Development of Services
Our focus is outstanding patient care and we continually aim to develop services to further achieve this aim. We are always willing to discuss individual patient care or possible developments that will improve the service we offer.
