Pharmacy Oncology & Haematology
Who we are
The Oncology and Haematology pharmacy team at the NNUH is made up of specialist pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and assistant technical officers.
We support the safe and effective prescribing and supply of systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) – including oral, intravenous, subcutaneous and intrathecal.
The specialist nature of our work sees us working with the wider multi-disciplinary team on a daily basis, from cancer specialist nurses to consultants to the pharmacy aseptic team.
What we do
As part of cancer services we have many roles:
The technical staff dispense and accuracy check SACT, procure and manage high-cost drugs, deal with patient enquiries, arrange medication delivery and support medication reconciliation at ward level.
The pharmacists are responsible for the clinical check of SACT, manage the funding of high-cost drugs, support clinical provision at ward level, counsel patients on new treatments, run pharmacist-led clinics and provide teaching sessions to other specialities.
Neither list is comprehensive, but highlights the variety of activities that we are involved in.
Our vision:
The field of Oncology and Haematology is growing rapidly, and our pharmacy team are keen to keep up with this growth.
Our vision is to develop numerous pharmacist-led clinics in specialities including breast and prostate cancer; develop opportunities for technicians including the clinical check of Homecare prescriptions, protocol writing and counselling patients at treatment initiation; and build a dedicated satellite dispensary to support cancer services.
