Delivery Suite

What we offer

Delivery suite is located within the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital, and there are a team of healthcare professionals to look after you and your baby in labour, including Midwives and Doctors (Obstetricians, Anaesthetists, Neonatologists) and maternity care assistants.

Some people may be recommended to birth on Delivery Suite to allow for further monitoring, this is assessed on an individual basis.

There are choices of pain relief including water (There is one pool on delivery suite), gas and air (Entonox), pain killing injections (pethidine and remifentanil) and an epidural (a small tube inserted into your back to deliver pain relieving medication).

Your baby’s heart rate may be monitored on delivery suite when in labour, either intermittently (occasional intervals) or continuously (throughout the whole labour), depending on your individual needs. Delivery suite is equipped for medicalised and non-medicalised birth, there are light projectors, birthing balls, peanut balls and facilities available for you to bring your own music.

A midwife will look after you in labour and you may also see the doctors on delivery suite. You have the option to give birth on Delivery Suite and have Midwife Led Care in low-risk pregnancies.

In addition to giving birth, you may also be admitted to Delivery Suite for closer monitoring should any complications arise in pregnancy after 18 weeks. The Maternity Assessment Unit MAU is also situated on delivery suite.

How do I make this choice?

The place of birth should be discussed with the team looking after you during your pregnancy. If you are “low risk” or “midwife led care”, this will be a Midwife, or if you have additional needs in pregnancy this may be a doctor.
