How can a Psychologist help with Pain?

Why might I see a psychologist in a pain clinic?

Being referred to a psychologist does not mean that your pain is not real or that it is ‘all in your mind.’ Pain is complex and involves the mind and body.  We understand that living with pain can be distressing and can affect a person’s mood and ability to cope with their pain.

What does a psychologist do?

Clinical Psychologists work alongside you to understand your pain and how it might be affecting you. Together you can find helpful strategies to enable you to live well alongside your pain, in line with your personal goals and values. Psychologists have doctoral-level training and use evidence-based therapies to support improving your self-management and overall quality of life. They work with you and other members of the team (Consultants, Physiotherapists, Nurses and Occupational Therapists) to help you manage your pain.
