Pharmacy

Welcome to the Pharmacy Department. We provide a full range of pharmaceutical services to support the needs of our large teaching hospital. Our website is designed to be both informative and helpful, offering guidance on how to best utilise our services and address any pharmaceutical concerns you may have.

The pharmacy department is made up of several specialised teams working together to deliver care to both hospital patients and those in community health services. While each team operates independently, they all contribute to the comprehensive pharmacy service provided across the Trust. Despite the high demands of the department, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of care.

At the heart of our department is the Dispensary, with other pharmacy teams surrounding it. You can explore more about these teams and their roles by using the navigation menu.

Our pharmacists have completed a four-year Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree, followed by twelve months of pre-registration training in settings like community or hospital pharmacies or industry. They then pass a final exam to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Hospital pharmacists work closely with clinical teams to ensure the correct medicines are prescribed, create and monitor treatment plans, and provide essential medication information to both staff and patients.

Pharmacy technicians are key members of our team, supporting pharmacists in preparing and dispensing medicines, making sterile medications, and managing stock control and ordering. They complete a two-year training program, typically while working in a pharmacy setting.
