The Department of Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital comprises of five consultants providing the full range of upper GI speciality services for NNUH and the region as a whole, namely:

Cancer Surgery

The upper GI team regularly perform surgery for Oesophagogastric cancer and is a tertiary referral centre. They work in close co-operation with the Cancer Network, colleagues in gastroenterology, oncology and other hospitals in other regions.

Operations Performed

  • Total Gastrectomy
  • Subtotal gastrectomy (laparoscopic and open)
  • Minimally invasive and lap assisted Oesophagectomy
  • GIST wedge resection
  • Staging laparoscopy
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

 Benign Work:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (over 500 per year)
  • Laparoscopic Nissen and partial fundoplication (for reflux disease)
  • Laparoscopic repair of paraoesophageal hernia
  • Laparoscopic and open hernia repair (TEPP and TAPP)
  • Laparoscopic splenectomy
