Clinical Biochemistry
Clinical Biochemistry evaluates the biochemical processes in the body, using many different techniques. Our laboratory uses the Abbott Alinity platform, integrated with an automated sample track system.
The Clinical Biochemistry section of Laboratory Medicine carries out the biochemical analysis of blood, urine and other body fluids using large throughput analysers. A wide variety of analytical tests are performed, including those to monitor the functioning of kidneys, liver, bone, heart and thyroid.
This department also measures:
- Tumour markers such as HCG and CEA,
- Glucose and HbA1c for diabetic monitoring,
- Hormone levels and tests for drug monitoring such as digoxin, anti-epileptic drugs, paracetamol, salicylate and antibiotics.
We offer a comprehensive analytical and advisory service to the hospital and other organisations in east Norfolk, and GPs have open access to our services.
Clinical Biochemistry encompasses Biochemistry, Toxicology and Endocrinology (Analytical Specialist Chemistry) and is accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) to BS EN ISO15189:2022

There are Clinical Biochemistry departments in all three Trusts in the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) network, producing more than 14 million test results a year.
