Specimen Reception
Specimen Reception is the first point of contact with Laboratory Medicine and is where specimens requiring analysis are received. The laboratory provides not only a service to the hospital but also the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and other outside organisations.
Reception staff provide support to the Biomedical Scientists (BMSs), Clinical Scientists and Medical Staff and also carry out the pre-analytical preparation of samples.
This includes the inputting of patient demographics and investigations to the laboratory computer system, labelling and sorting of pathological samples including blood, urine, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), faeces and other body fluids.
