Pacemaker, CRT and ICD Clinic

These clinics are where patients come regularly to have their devices checked and analysed.

Pacemakers have been inserted for slow heart rates at NNUH for many years, and the Norfolk and Norwich is regarded as a centre of excellence in this field. Many people come regularly to the pacemaker clinics and see the friendly pacing team. They know that if they have concerns, help is a phone call away.

The pacing team is led by Andrea Reeve with a team of physiologists.

Implanted Cardiac Defibrillators (ICDs) have been implanted to help in the management of fast rhythm problems since 2006. These devices also come under the remit of the pacemaker service and Simon Bowles our Specialist Arrhythmia nurse, is very involved in the management of ICD patients. He regularly organises support groups which meet twice a year, spring and autumn as a way of keeping patients and their relatives informed about ICD matters. Simon is also responsible for coordinating the cardioversion service. Cardioversion is an electrical treatment used in the management of a rhythm problem called atrial fibrillation (for which Warfarin is needed pre treatment).

Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT) uses another type of pacemaker with an extra lead inserted into the heart to help patients with impairment of the pumping chambers (ventricles) of their heart that, if untreated, may lead to heart failure. CRT pacemakers have been inserted at NNUH since April 2009 – thus saving patients trips to centres outside the county. Dr Ian Williams  is the lead cardiologist.
