Cardiology
Cardiology services at the Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital (JCLH) are provided by Dr Rahul Roy (Paediatrician with expertise in Cardiology), Dr Graham Derrick (Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist from Great Ormond Street Hospital, London) who both have a monthly clinic 12 times per year.
Our echocardiography service is supported by the Cardiology Department by two senior chief cardiac physiologists with support from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) . There are facilities for basic electrocardiography, chest radiograph, 24 -72 hour Holter monitor, event recorder, high quality echocardiography machine and Telemedicine link with tertiary centre i.e. GOSH, London.
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is common; currently around 8 in 1000 live born babies will suffer from some form of CHD. The prevalence will continue to rise, as treatments continue to become more successful. The anomalies vary in severity and can present in very different ways and at different ages. Heart murmur may be an important presenting sign and there has been an increase in the number of referral of children with asymptomatic murmur for evaluation by echocardiography. This is in part due to increased detection of murmurs by general practitioners and paediatricians and the need for reassurance of cardiac normality.
