Norfolk and Norwich Kidney Centre
The Norfolk and Norwich Kidney Centre (NNKC) in Francis Way, Bowthorpe, Norwich, is a purpose-built centre operating in partnership with renal service providers, Diaverum UK. The state-of-the-art building, opened in March 2020, has eight bays, each comprising four stations, along with four individual side rooms. Braun dialysis machines are used, offering up-to-date dialysis treatment.
Most kidney patients requiring dialysis treatment attend three times a week and are offered regular dialysis slots. We offer dialysis treatment on memory foam dialysis couches and the clinic is bright and airy. Each station has access to its own television and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. All patients are cared for by one of five team leaders in the nurse-led unit, which also has medical input most days.
Outpatient clinics are held at the centre, with free parking immediately outside the entrance. Hot drinks and biscuits are offered but no canteen facilities are available.
The centre also is a base for specialist nurses, including a Transplant Nurse Specialist, two Vascular Access Nurse Specialists, an Anaemia Nurse Specialist and an Iron Therapy Nurse Specialist. Our patients are also cared for by our own Renal Social Worker and Renal Counsellor. Renal Dieticians provide dietary support and advice to our patients. Our pre Dialysis Nurse visits new patients in their homes and guides them through the journey of kidney failure. Treatment options are discussed at these meetings.
Referrals for treatment are from one of the kidney doctors at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The clinic also houses three consulting rooms, a procedure room and seminar room for patient and staff meetings.
The clinic operates from 7am to 10.30pm from Monday to Saturday and closes on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Renal Home Dialysis Unit
We have a purpose-built section offering the latest facilities for our home patients, enabling our home programme to grow and provide a better choice of treatment for all. Treatments that will be available in the Home Dialysis area will be:
- Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
- Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD)
- Assisted Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (aAPD)
- Home Haemodialysis.
We also have the facilities to do minor surgical procedures. Our aim is to provide our new patients with confidence and empowerment.
Holiday Haemodialysis
We are able to arrange dialysis for patient holidays both at home and abroad, subject to availability. We also accept holiday patients from other units to dialyse here and on our Cromer unit – again, this is subject to availability of spaces. Please contact us to find out more details.
